Currently Driving Without Education, Insurance, or License? AM-60!
There is mutual agreement that immigration reform is a top concern of today. As a California resident, it is no surprise that we have the largest immigrant population within the United States. Therefore, it is important that we think about how the 7 percent of immigrants of our beautiful state are getting to their jobs each day? If they are unable to obtain a California driver’s license due to the inability to provide proof of legal presence, are they driving to work illegally?
We all need to make a living, and those behind the AB60 Driver License Implementation understand the need for immediate immigration reform. Rather than pushing these immigrants to driving not only without a driver’s license but without the proper driving education and auto insurance as well, it is important that we implement change, today.
Recently passed, Assembly Bill 60 (AM-60) will grant immigrants a driver’s privilege, which is unique from a standard California driver’s license. As clearly stated as an immigrant, a driver’s privilege will not act as a document for establishing eligibility for a public benefit or form of employment.
In order to apply for a driver’s license under AB-60, you must complete the following tasks:
- Have a thumb print taken
- Have your picture taken
- Study for the driver’s license knowledge test
- Make an appointment at your local DMV
- Obtain proof of identity
- Obtain proof of California residency
- Pass a knowledge test, vision test, and a road sign test
- Schedule an appointment for a behind-the-wheel driving test
